With Ali Michael Mann proves he is undoubtedly one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. What would have been a by-the-numbers biopic instead is used as a medium to tell the greater story of the black struggle. Admittedly the initial deviating focus might throw some off but as the spectacular story comes to its fittingly larger than life ending all the pieces successfully fall in place. Pitch perfect casting adds to its merits. At two and a half hours the running time may limit viewership but every minute is time well spent.
